What can be treated

  • Discolouration or lack of pigment in the areola or nipple
  • Areola or nipple removed during surgery
  • Areola or nipple reshaping

Introduction

Areola and nipple tattooing (micropigmentation) is usually done after breast reconstruction. Pigment is placed beneath the skin with needles to colour the reconstructed nipple and give the appearance of an areola. The colour is only partly permanent. Treatment can start once reconstruction has been complete for at least three months.

You don’t need to have had reconstruction to have the treatment — it can also correct areola loss or asymmetry after breast surgery.

We take great care to match the size and colour of the nipple and areola, but as the procedure is your choice and not medically necessary, a perfect match can’t be guaranteed.

Benefits

The aim is to improve the appearance of the breast by matching size and colour to the opposite nipple and areola (if one side was treated). An exact colour match can’t be guaranteed, because pigments differ and precise colouring is difficult.

If you’ve had reconstruction on both sides, you can choose the size and colour freely.

Many patients find the treatment has a positive effect on their quality of life and body image, and raises their self-esteem.

Risks

This is an invasive procedure and carries some risk. The main risks are:

  • Allergy to the pigment (we carry out a patch test at least 48 hours before)
  • Colour mismatch
  • Fading over time
  • Uneven colour
  • Infection
  • Bleeding straight after the procedure
  • Scarring
  • Skin irritation
  • Some discomfort during and after the procedure

What affects the result

  • Medication
  • Natural skin tone
  • Skin characteristics: dryness, oiliness, sun damage, thickness and acidity
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Your individual healing

When to consider treatment

After mastectomy

Complete your breast reconstruction with a natural-looking areola and nipple. Our practitioners combine artistry with modern techniques to help you regain your confidence.

After reduction or uplift

Scarring is often the main concern after breast surgery. We use special methods to reduce the visibility of scars, and can correct irregular areolas to restore symmetry and shape.

Enlarging and defining

For men and women whose areolas are too pale, undefined, small or asymmetric, we create a balanced shape, richer colour and natural definition.

Gender-affirming surgery

Before or after surgery, areola tattooing can feminise the areolas or create a new areola and nipple complex — helping you look the way you feel.

After gynaecomastia surgery

More common than many people realise. After surgery we can help with areola repair and scar camouflage, so you can feel confident again.

Areola & nipple reconstruction FAQ

Do I have to pay a deposit?

All our consultations are complimentary. To book a service we take a deposit to reserve your slot. The deposit is non-refundable within 48 hours of the appointment, and you can reschedule once.

My surgeon didn’t make a nipple flap. Can I still have the procedure?

Many reconstruction surgeons create a nipple flap if the patient wants repigmentation, so the artist doesn’t need to create the same 3D effect. If the skin is flat, every detail of a natural areola is carefully drawn instead. Whether you’re a suitable candidate is decided after a thorough consultation that considers your medical history.

How do I book an appointment?

Send us a message on WhatsApp, a DM on Instagram @bodycanvaslondon, an email to info@bodycanvas.uk or call +44 7769 210699.

I haven’t had surgery but I’m unhappy with how my areolas look. Can I have the procedure?

Yes — with or without breast augmentation you can have an areola tattoo. Tattooing over scars is possible too, and we’ll try to soften any scar tissue in the area.

Do you do this procedure for men?

Yes, we offer areola and nipple correction for men too.

Can I have it straight after breast surgery?

You need to complete the healing period your surgeon gave you. You’ll also need your surgeon’s sign-off and a recommendation on timing.

Can I have treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding we won’t be able to do a procedure for you, as your body is already going through a lot of changes and we don’t want any possible risk for you and your baby. We’re happy to see you 12 months after the birth, or once the baby is no longer dependent on you.

I have a medical condition. Can I have treatment?

We need to know which medical condition you have, as certain conditions make a procedure unsafe. If you’re unsure, check with your GP before your appointment.

I’m still having chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Can I have the procedure?

We’re happy to see you for a consultation. We’ll need information about your reconstruction and your consultations with your oncologist, radiologist and surgeon. Chemotherapy or radiotherapy must have stopped for 6 months, and we’ll plan your treatment together at the consultation.

Is medical micropigmentation the same as a tattoo?

It’s slightly different: the application technique and the pigments used can vary.
