Aftercare
What’s normal?
At first: some bleeding, localised swelling, tenderness or bruising around the piercing.
While healing: some discolouration, itching, and a yellowish fluid (not pus) that forms a crust. Don’t pick it!
Healing time depends on several things. Problem piercings are often caused by irritation from clothing, playing with the jewellery, or contact with unwashed hands. The right aftercare and as little irritation as possible give your piercing the best chance to heal.
Cleaning routine
We recommend a sterile saline solution called Stericlens.
- Wash your hands.
- Don’t remove, twist or turn the jewellery.
- Soak both sides of the piercing with saline to soften any crust.
- Soak a clean cotton bud in saline and gently wipe the crust away.
- With a fresh cotton bud, clean around the piercing and the jewellery.
- Repeat on both sides until clean (3 times each side).
- Pat dry with clean kitchen paper.
Do this twice a day for the first two months, then once a day for the rest of the healing period.
Oral piercings
- Rinse with alcohol-free mouthwash every time you eat, drink or smoke for the first 2–6 weeks.
- Avoid citrus, spice and anything very hot.
- Cold drinks help reduce swelling.
- Change your toothbrush, as your old one may harbour bacteria.
Do
- Stay healthy. A strong immune system is key to healing. Eat well, drink plenty of fluids and get enough sleep.
- Use a travel pillow. Rest your ear in the gap so you don’t sleep on a new ear piercing.
- Rinse in the shower. After showering, rinse the piercing to remove soap. The water also softens stubborn crust.
- Downsize your jewellery. Once swelling settles after 2–4 weeks, pop back to the studio for a check-up and a shorter bar. Less movement helps the piercing heal straight.
Don’t
- Don’t twist or turn the jewellery. Forcing it can reopen the wound, delay healing and drag bacteria in.
- Don’t sleep on it. Pressure causes irritation and migration.
- Don’t use harsh chemicals. No alcohol, TCP, surgical spirit or tea tree. Use sterile saline only.
- Avoid baths and swimming — steam rooms, baths, the sea and pools — for the first 4 weeks.
And finally
Every piercing carries some risk of swelling, bruising and scarring. Although uncommon, some piercings may migrate, reject or grow out.
A piercing can feel healed before it actually is, because tissue heals from the outside in. Be patient and keep cleaning it for the whole healing period. Any questions — just get in touch. Happy healing!
